1969 212 Conference Basketball Champion:  Hector Bulldogs

Front Row: D.Lofgren, R.Weihr, R.Penkert, S.Specht, R.Swanson, L.Rouna, S.Johnson, R.Rassmussen.
Second Row: Coach Doney, Dave Hauer, L.Anderson, J.Krentz, N.Sing,

The Hector Bulldogs won the 1969 212 Conference Championship with a perfect 14-0 record.  The champions won the conference with a tenacious defense and a balanced scoring attack of four players averaging in double figures. Danube finished in second in the conference with a 12-2 record.  As in the 1967-68 basketball season, scoring was once again higher than ever before.  On the last week of conference play, Danube beat Brownton 101-81, Buffalo Lake beat Bird Island, 105-86 and Renville beat Stewart, 91-58.  On the other extreme, Sacred Heart only came up with 21 points in their 78-21 loss to Hector.  6’5 junior forward from Buffalo Lake, Paul Williams scored 442 points in conference play.  His total points and average of 31.6 points per game broke Danube's Bob Bruggers record of 428 points set in 1962.  He joined the One Grand Club on the last game of his junior year.  Brownton's Brian Schuette finished his career at Brownton High School with 1129 points.

In District 12 Tournament play Hector lost to Glencoe, 58-57 in overtime.  Hector's coach, Perry Doney, called the loss “the toughest loss”, he had ever had in his 30 years of coaching.  Hector led with just seconds remaining, but could not hold on for the victory.  Olivia scored on a three point play with 5 seconds remaining for their 59-58 win over Danube.  Olivia beat Glencoe in the finals, 59-54, in triple over time.  Olivia lost to Gaylord in the regional finals held at Montevideo.

Second Row: L. Kleinhuizen, K. Raske, G. Wertish, S. Mulder, G. Randleman, D. Brettin, D. Agre, R. Blankenhagen, J. Millerbernd, W.K. Smith, Coach Bergquist.

The Renville Indians won the 1969 212 Conference Track Championship for the 2nd consecutive year at the Buffalo Lake track.  Renville dominated the meet with seven first places to score 73 points, outdistancing Hector by 23 points.  Renville's Dan Smith was the star of the meet with four first places, winning the High and Low Hurdles, 880 and long jump. Other first places winners for Renville were Steve Mulder in the discus and high jump, and Dan Smith in the 100 yard dash.  Neil Sing of Hector won the 220 and 440 yard dash and placed second in the 100 yard dash.  Danube's Ben Dykema broke the conference record in the pole vault when he vaulted 12’0.  That broke the record of 11’3, set by Neil Schendel of Danube in 1967.  Hector's mile relay team ran a 3.43.9 to break the record of 3.44.2 set by Buffalo Lake in 1963.  Ben Dykema of Danube showed his athletic versatility when he broke the pole vault record and won the shot put.  Dykema was the 212 Conference and District 12 Heavyweight Wrestling Champion.  At 210 pounds, it was highly unusual for an athlete of that size to pole vault twelve feet.
